A Cool Indie Brand Discovery – Make Beauty – Review

I rarely get to test cosmetics but when I do, it is an experience I love. I have a special place in my heart for indie brands. The brands that are not mass-produced and are found at specialty shops and their own websites. I am not saying there is anything wrong with drug stores/department store brands. I just love to support the indie brands for their innovations and technology. The owners/creators follow their passions and in the end, something wonderful comes out of their hard work. To show you how far I go back with indie brands, does anyone remember the early days of Urban Decay or Hard Candy?

Today I am going to review two products by Make Beauty. I was sent two samples sizes of their Silk Cream Lipstick and Matte Finish Eyeshadow. The samples themselves are so cute. Does anyone remember the lipstick bullets their mom got from Avon? The eyeshadow is a mini version of the full-sized. I have had the samples for well over a week and still have plenty left.

I didn’t have any choice in the shades that were sent to me. When I read the description of Taffy: A medium pink with purple undertones, I was concerned because pink purple isn’t a color I can pull off. Then I remembered I am reviewing the formula so the color shouldn’t matter. I was in for a surprise. Not only did this color look amazing on me, it gave me that, “your lips but better” color. You can see in the picture below, that looks really natural. For the picture, I added some clear gloss.

About The Product

Vivid, saturated color that does double duty as a protective moisturizing treatment with antioxidant vitamins, rosehip, soybean and safflower oils. Aloe and chamomile extracts further condition lips. Feather-resistant and intensely pigmented in true-wear shades.

I normally do not have a good relationship with lipstick. My skin can be sensitive. My lips are no exception. I normally stick with stains or gloss because lipstick makes my lips dry and prone to peeling. The Silk Cream Lipstick is so creamy, so comfortable and it lasted for hours. I am sold on this formula. My only issue is that I feel this shade does not match the description.

imageI got really excited when I saw the Matte Finish eyeshadow in Alabaster: (A soft eggshell with peach undertones.) I love neutrals. I wish I could pull off whites but it ends up looking too stark on me. This shade is perfect. When you get older, it is suggested you should stick to matte formulas. The problem I have with a matte formula is that it always ends up looking flat, dull and powdery. When I applied the color with brush and blew off the excess, there was no “smoke”. It blends like a dream. This formula is none of the above. It is truly like it is described.

About The Product

Turn heads with this stunning, intensely pigmented shadow in an array of blendable shades. The velvety matte powder goes on smoothly with a crease-resistant, oil-free formula that looks fresh hours after you have applied it. Vitamins C and E help to provide anti-oxidant protection for the delicate eye area. Apply dry or wet for a more intense finish.

imageThis shade, like the lipstick, is my skin shade but better. It looks just like my skin but even toned and it erased the ugly purple-blue vein thing I have going on my lids. It is great on its own for a no-makeup look or as a base or highlighter. I used Alabaster as a highlighter in this picture. You can use Matte formula wet and I find when you do that, it gives the matte formula a slight sheen. This color reminded me of a pink-peal opal. Unfortunately, I was not able to get a good swatch. The pictures I took didn’t do it justice.

I tried the matte shadow with and without a primer. My skin is dry and makeup tends to disappear very quickly. Only really high-end brands last on me. I have to say that Matte Finish Eyeshadow did a good job without a primer. However, using a primer, really increased the wear time.
